CALIBER V: The mechanism of the constant force is positioned on the escapement wheel, the last part of the wheel train, and it ensures that the balance receives the same force bit by bit. This compensates for the mainspring’s irregular force-curve and tolerances of the wheel train and the second hand moves step by step each second.

What's the reasoning behind the two small cutouts on the balance wheel and the arc shaped cutouts on the remontoir wheel?

Avatar

Here is my thoughts on your questions Rasmus, based on my multitude of (amateur) studying of watch calibre designs and enjoying the horology hobby.I would assume such cutouts are not only to reduce weight for the calibre and entire watch, whilst maintaining strength, but also to help better with air dynamics and efficiency inside the calibre itself (even at such micro levels).Reducing drag in a timepiece is key for chronometer or precise timekeeping, and thus lighter weight plus clever designs can help with reducing any type of friction which would cause less energy output. The faster the frequency of a watch, the more reduction of friction is necessary, as more air is moved and drag can increase.Only the Cartier ID Lab 2 timepiece can be considered to be the world's most efficient watch, with virtually no air friction inside the case (vacuum) and near frictionless parts; unfortunately, this piece is forever a one-off concept.Anyway, I'm sure Uhrenmanufaktur Lang & Heyne GmbH are better equipped than I to answer 😊

The first reason of the shape of the remontoir wheel cutout is to make it elastic to absorb the shocks when the teeth impinge to the pallett, but you are right, also to make this wheel very light.

The cutout of the escapement wheel was only my first idea to fix the remontoir spiral in this shape. I rejected this idea after my silicon and LIGA research. (bad experiences) In reality it is a massiv gold alloy with 4 spokes cutout, make in the traditional technology. - For me the best way of watchmaking!
