KONRAD I. DER GROSSE UND FROMME
KONRAD I. DER GROSSE UND FROMME, COUNT OF WETTIN, MARGRAVE OF MEISSEN AND LUSATIA
Born about 1098, gest. am 05.02.1157

When Konrad was born Europe has been flood in deep Christian religiousness. The crusades, the inquisition as well as the development of the bourgeoisie and crafts have been important historical events in the 11th century. After several years, thru fortunate circumstances, Konrad was able to escape the prison and eked out the margraviate of Meißen, which he defended as liege lord for the German Emperor.

With self-assurance and the right touch of politics the name Wettin was brought to today's Saxony. So, he's the progenitor and laid foundation for the upcoming sovereigns. That's why he heads the Procession of the Princes of Saxony at the Dresden castle.

At the age of 60, he renounced the secular powers and became friar in the Petersberg abbey where he died already two months later.
